Visitor Experiences

"Staying in a gassho-zukuri farmhouse was like stepping into a fairy tale. Waking up to mist over the thatched roofs, learning to make washi paper, and sharing stories around the irori hearth - this was the authentic Japan we'd dreamed of experiencing."

William Tan William Tan. - Malaysia

"The winter illumination was magical, but what really touched us was the warmth of our host family. They shared not just their home but their way of life - we helped prepare dinner, learned about maintaining the thatched roof, and felt part of the village."

Eirik Johansen Eirik Johansen. - Norway

"Participating in the rice harvest gave me such appreciation for traditional farming methods. The whole experience - from working in the fields to enjoying the fruits of our labor at dinner - connected me to Japan's agricultural heritage in ways I never expected."

Chaiwat Srisuk Chaiwat Srisuk. - Thailand

Cultural Etiquette Guide

Entering Homes

Always remove shoes before entering gassho-zukuri houses. Slippers are usually provided, but not worn on tatami mats.

Futons are laid out directly on tatami mats. Guests typically help with putting away bedding in the morning.

Hearth Etiquette

When sitting around the irori hearth, avoid stepping over it or pointing your feet toward the fire.

Photography

Always ask permission before photographing villagers. Some areas may prohibit photography.
