About the Expedition

The Gunung Tahan Expedition is our most challenging trekking package, designed for experienced hikers seeking to conquer Malaysia's highest mountain. Located in the heart of Taman Negara, this 7-day adventure will test your physical endurance and mental resilience as you traverse through dense rainforests, cross rivers, and ascend to the 2,187m summit.

Our professional guides will lead you through the classic Merapoh route, ensuring your safety while sharing their extensive knowledge of the rainforest ecosystem. You'll experience pristine wilderness, sleep under the stars, and enjoy breathtaking views from the summit that few get to witness.

Difficulty Level: Advanced

This expedition requires excellent physical condition, prior multi-day trekking experience, and mental preparedness for challenging conditions.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival & Trek to Kem Kor

  • Morning: Meet at Merapoh, gear check, final preparations
  • Trek: Merapoh (205m) to Kem Kor (460m) - 6km (4-5 hours)
  • Evening: Campsite orientation, dinner, rest

Day 2 Trek to Kem Botak

  • Trek: Kem Kor to Kem Botak (1,912m) - 8km (7-8 hours)
  • Features: Steep ascents, lush mossy forest
  • Evening: Sunset views, overnight at exposed campsite

Day 3 Summit Day - Gunung Tahan (2,187m)

  • Trek: Kem Botak to summit and return - 4km (6-7 hours round trip)
  • Features: Rocky summit, panoramic views, summit photos
  • Evening: Return to Kem Botak for overnight

Day 4 Trek to Kem Gedung

  • Trek: Kem Botak to Kem Gedung (1,050m) - 8km (6-7 hours)
  • Features: Descend through different forest types

Day 5 Trek to Kem Bonsai

  • Trek: Kem Gedung to Kem Bonsai (600m) - 6km (5-6 hours)
  • Features: River crossings, beautiful valley

Day 6 Trek to Kem Belumut

  • Trek: Kem Bonsai to Kem Belumut (300m) - 8km (6-7 hours)
  • Features: Final challenging sections

Day 7 Return to Merapoh

  • Trek: Kem Belumut to Merapoh - 6km (3-4 hours)
  • Afternoon: Certificate ceremony, transport to town
  • Evening: Expedition concludes

Preparation Guidelines

Physical Preparation

 

  • 3-6 months of regular cardio training
  • Practice hikes with weighted backpack (10-15kg)
  • Strength training for legs and core
  • Build up to 6-8 hour hiking days

Gear Checklist

 

  • Quality hiking boots (broken in)
  • Lightweight backpack (50-70L)
  • Quick-dry clothing (no cotton)
  • Waterproof gear (jacket, pack cover)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries
